The Whiteville High School foursome of Ervin Jones, Herman Jones, Michael Ramsey and Roosevelt Colson turn in a time of 43.0 seconds to hold off a strong effort by Thomasville and win the 400-meter relay title at the state 1A-2A track and field championships at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Fetzer Field. Ervin Jones also takes second-place finishes in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Colson finishes third in the 100 and fifth in the 200, and Ramsey garners a fourth place in the 110-meter hurdles. Coach Glenn McKoy’s Wolfpack scores 38 points to tie North Rowan for third place in the final team standings behind first-place Hendersonville and runner-up Salisbury. Colson returns in 1987 to win the 200-meter dash despite experience severe leg cramps prior to the competition.
