Water, sewer may go to Wooded Acres By JEFFERSON WEAVER The town of Lake Waccamaw is gauging interest in a plan to extend water and sewer service into the Wooded Acres community. The neighborhood, which is located off Dupree Landing Road, already has a few water and sewer clients, according to town manager Darren Currie. “I think we have 10 or 12 near the front part,” Currie said. “It’s not many.” Developers originally planned to take advantage of county water when it came through the area, but when that plan fell through, some landowners were left with undevelopable property. Some of the land is suitable for wells and septic tanks, but Currie said a number of the 150 lots wouldn’t pass a septic filtration test. Approximately 60 homes are in the area. The project isn’t a done deal, Currie said. It’s part of the town’s ongoing update of the Capital Improvements Plan. “Some lots won’t perk,” he said. “With property values rising almost daily around here, this could make a difference in whether or not someone builds on their lot. “We want to see if people are interested,” Currie said. “If there’s sufficient interest, then we can look at other steps.” Changing demographics at the lake make for more questions from new residents and developers about municipal services like water and sewer. “A lot of the people who come here are from areas where water and sewer is normal,” Currie said. “They aren’t always willing to buy a house with a well and a septic tank. Water and sewer can make a difference on how well or fast your property sells.” The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 11, at the Lake Waccamaw Fire Substation on Dupree Landing Road.
