LAKE VIEW, S.C. -- Zhazmyn Shabré Smith, 10-months-old, died on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, at McLeod Medical Center in Dillon, S.C.
Final rites were held Saturday, Nov. 24, at Butler Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with Pastor Ronald Alford and Rev. Thomas Register officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

EVERGREEN -- Larry Wayne Criscoe, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Erstine Woodburn Criscoe and a brother, Michael Bryant.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 24, at Bladen Funeral Home with Rev. Wade McLamb officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Hinson Criscoe of the home; a daughter, Kimberly Priest of Clarkton; and two granddaughters.
WILLIE BROOX WEBSTER SR.
FAYETTEVILLE -- Willie Broox Webster Sr., 91, formerly of Fairmont, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, at his home. He was born Oct. 4, 1916 in Lake City moved to Fairmont at an early age. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward and Estelle Carter Webster; a son, David Charles Webster; two brothers, Charles Davis Webster and Ashton Thomas Webster; and a sister, Elise Webster Loftis.
Webster graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Phamarcy in 1940 owned, and operated Webster’s Pharmacy in Fairmont beginning in 1948. After his retirement, he worked as a pharmacist with Robeson County Department of Health maintaining his pharmacy license to age 89
He served in the United States Army during World War II serving in the Army Air Corp. and remained active in the United States Air Force Reserves until 1969 when he transferred to the retired reserve Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Webster was the first president of the Fairmont High School Tornado Club, school board member of the Fairmont City Schools, and mayor of Fairmont from 1973-1989. He served on the Fairmont Development Corporation, Robeson County Industrial Commission. He was a member of Fairmont First Baptist Church, he served as a usher and director of training union. He was a Mason, a Shriner, Civitan, Royal Order of the Amaranth, and served on the board of directors of Southern National Bank (now BB&T), and was past president of the Fairmont Golf Course.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at First Baptist Church of Fairmont with Rev. Jesse Yarbrough officiating. Burial will follow in Floyd Memorial Cemetery in Fairmont. Floyd Funeral Home of Fairmont is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lillian Hughes Webster of Fayetteville, formerly of Fairmont; two sons, Willie Broox Webster Jr. and wife, Tatjana of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Michael Thomas Webster and wife Kassie of Wilson; a daughter, Elizabeth W. Manis and husband Paul of Chapel Hill; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two loving caregivers, Martha Darden and Melissa Brinkley.

WILMINGTON--Margaret Idell Hammond Rich, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at her residence. She was born on July 3, 1930 the daughter of the late Charlie Mike Hammond and Vera Mae Brown Hammond. She was predeceased by her brothers, Charlie Hammond, J.Q. Hammond, Lanue Hammond, Donnie Hammond; two sisters, Carrie Cook, Juanita Horne and two children, Bobby R. Hamilton and Scarlett Bullard.

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Jervey Briskey Mitchell, 105, of the St. James community, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at his home. He was the husband of the late Mamie Gertrude Graham Mitchell and the son of the late Everette and Estelle Freeman Mitchell.

HEDRICK SHERMAN
LAKE WACCAMAW -- Theresa Hedrick Sherman, 76, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia where she and her husband, Stuart, were on vacation. Her parents, Clyde Reitzel Hedrick and Stella Lamkin Hedrick and an infant sister preceded her in death.
Born in Caldwell County, Lenoir on Nov. 1, 1931, she was a graduate of Salem Academy. She eared a BS in chemistry and biology from Salem College and a BS from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.
As a member of the American Red Cross for more than 20 years of continuous service in a wide variety of positions in various locations around the country, her cumulative successful experience resulted in her becoming Chairman of Volunteers for two years, Chairman of Blood Program, Chairperson of Records and Recognition, and co-chairperson of the Douglas/Sarpy County, Omaha, Nebraska Chapter for two years. She worked with Special Olympics, and special needs children for many years during her travels with her husband’s United States Air Force position. She worked at CHAP (Children Have A Potential) instructing teachable handicapped children and established CHAP and Special Olympics at Vandenberg AFB, Calif. 1975-77 and Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital Auxiliary in Grand Forks, N.D. 1972-74.
She worked with Assumption Church of Outreach Program in Washington, D.C. 1982-96; Children’s Hospital Women’s Association, Dayton, Ohio 1978-80; Dayton, Ohio Philharmonic Board 1978-80; North Dakota Ballet Company Board 1972-74; Boy Scout and Girl Scout Leadership 1963-69; Community Playhouse Guild Board, Omaha, Nebr. in 1965.
Local community service included: Lake Waccamaw Woman Club Member since 1988 and President (2000-02) working on a variety of community projects. She worked diligently for 15 years on the Lake Waccamaw Winter Festival Board helping in every aspect of the festival during her tenure. She established and implemented The Boys & Girls Homes Resident’s Muppets Program 1994-2004, showcasing the resident’s theatre talent and traveled extensively throughout North Carolina providing entertainment for numerous civic clubs, churches and schools. She was a member of the Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church for many years where she derived great pleasure from singing in the choir. She was extremely involved with The Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina during the tenure of her husband’s presidency.
She found time to raise three children while working in a variety of positions: six years volunteering as president and training chairperson for the Armed Forces Hostess Association, president and owner of a discount furniture business, sales person at the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., head librarian at Syllogistics, Inc. and assistant sales manager for Miller and Smith Homes in Virginia.
She was awarded honors for Military Wife of the Year in 1971, Community Leader of America Award 1971, Five Armed Forces Hostess Association Citations 1967-71, Red Cross Citations and Awards, Family Services Awards and Volunteer of the Year.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Major General Stuart Holmes Sherman Jr., USAF Retired, who resides at Lake Waccamaw. She is survived by her three adult children and their families: daughter, Deborah Theresa “Tesa” Bush and husband Erik Selden Bush of Lake Waccamaw, and their children, Alissa Cristalle Watts and husband Jody Watts and their son, Kai Tristan Watts of Green Sea, S.C., David Ward Edmonds Jr. of Wrightsville Beach and Joshua Stuart Bush who resides with parents; son, Stuart “Skip” Holmes Sherman III and partner, Gwyn Voges of Orlando, Fla. and his children, Alexandra Davis Sherman, Matt Diehl Sherman and Jett Clark Sherman; son, Clyde “Ritz” Reitzel Sherman and wife, Michelle Sherman of Laguna Beach, Calif. and their two children, Rachel Shannon Sherman and Mackenzie Michelle Murrell. She leaves two sisters, Marlene Neisler and husband Joe of Lake Waccamaw, and Phyllis Miller and husband John of Lenoir. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Jane Graham of Lenoir and the late Ruth Tysinger and her husband William Lee Tysinger Jr. of Lenoir.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24 from 6-8 p.m. at McKenzie Funeral Home in Whiteville. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 3 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina Leamons Roger Chapel at Lake Waccamaw. Commital services will follow in the adjacent Chapel Cemetery. Reverends Doug Currin and Tal Madison will officiate the services. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Dixie Belle Cox Williford, 65, formerly of Tabor City and Chester, S.C., died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg, S.C. She was the widow of William Shugart Williford Jr. She was born in Horry County, S.C., the daughter of the late Dewey Cicero Cox and Mamie Norris Cox.

WHITEVILLE -- Hazel Ripley, 83, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007. She was born Dec. 1, 1923 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Troy M. and Docia Singletary Thompson.
Ripley was well known for her demonstration work with local milk and sausage companies. She was a member of Grace Bible Church.

Stephen Michael Williams, dearly loved husband of Rosie "Becky" Williams Williams and wonderful father to Michael Andrew Williams and Matthew Aaron Williams, died at home on Sunday morning, Nov. 18, 2007. In addition to his immediate family, Steve is survived by many who loved him including sister-in-law Sharon B. Williams and nephew Ricky Williams (Allison) and Morgan and Mackenzie. In 1971 Steve was adopted by his other Williams family of in-laws: father-in-law the late Major Williams and mother-in-law Elsie, Roger Williams (Alecia) and Brock ("Leonardo"), Carol Williams Ham (Jimmy) and Jamie (Becky) and Anna, Josh and Carrie, Judy Williams Southern (the late Reverend David Southern) and Luke, Hannah ("Banana"), Bethany (Wes), Ernie Williams (Martha) and Scott (Patty) and Ryan and Colton, Terry Williams (Becky) and Kecia (Rodney) and Lilyanna, Lee (Nikki) and Beth. His father, the Reverend Richard Belmont Williams, his mother, Letha Tyner Williams Bowens and brother Richard Edwin Williams, preceded Steve in death.
Prior to moving to Wilmington in 1991, Steve was a member and deacon of Riegelwood Baptist Church. Steve loved God, his family, and friends. He was a kind and gentle soul who never met a stranger. Steve retired from Dupont in 2001 and was currently employed at General Electric where he was looking forward to a new career. Steve loved to play a round of golf with his family and enjoyed sharing his amateur photography.
A memorial service to celebrate Steve's short life will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 pm at First Baptist Church, 411 Market Street, Wilmington. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. At other times the family will receive friends at their residence. CARL HOWARD WARD
CHADBOURN -- Carl Howard Ward, 79, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at McLeod Medical Center, Florence, S.C. He was the son of the late Brice and Gertrude Horne Ward.
Ward was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Allen Myers and a great-grandson, Kelton Chase Godwin.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverends Robert Ratts and Tim Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Thompson Ward of the home; daughters, Theresa W. Myers and husband, Darrell of Graham, Robin Evans and husband, Jerry of Chadbourn, and Lynn Pennington and husband, Randy of Mt. Holly; a son, A. Carl Ward and wife, Jolene of Sterling, Va.; brother, Clayton Ward of Chadbourn; sister, Faye Freida of Sarasota, Fla.; and a special friend, Pat Clark of Whiteville; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.
DOROTHY DICK BAILEY
CHADBOURN -- Dorothy Dick Bailey, 99, died at her residence Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007. She was the daughter of the late John Emmett and Frostie Anderson Dick and the widow of the late Dr. George D. Elliot and Wayne E. Bailey. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jean Elliott.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church with Reverends Robert Link and Paul Layton officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery in Fair Bluff. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Surviving family include a son, John D. Elliott and wife, Mickie of Wilmington; a step-daughter, Margie B. Massenburg and husband, Ben of Maui, Hawaii; a granddaughter, Georgia Elliot Blanton and husband, Dale of Wilmington; two great-grandsons, Evan and Elliot, both of Wilmington; and numerous step-grandchildren.

JIMMIE AQUILLA SCOTT
FAIR BLUFF -- Jimmie Aquilla Scott (June 1, 1922-Nov. 17, 2007) loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away in his sleep early Saturday morning.
Mr. Jimmie was an alumnus of Duke University and a United States Navy veteran serving in the Pacific during World War II, he as a major in the United States Army National Guard, a Boy Scouts of America Scoutmaster and a Silver Beaver Award recipient. Mr. Jimmie was also a longtime chairman of the Administrative Council of Fair Bluff United Methodist Church and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Town of Fair Bluff. He owned and operated Scott Oil Company.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Fair Bluff United Methodist Church with the Rev. Neill Smith and Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Rogers Scott of the home; a daughter, Kay Scott Bullard and husband John of Laurinburg; four sons, Jimmie A. Scott Jr. and wife Robin of Chadbourn, Mark Rogers Scott and wife Ann of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Gregory D. Scott and wife Liz of Fair Bluff, and Neil Townsend Scott and wife Gay of Fair Bluff; grandsons, Scott Walter Bullard and wife Shannon of Waco, Texas, John Patrick Bullard of Savannah, Ga., William Paul Scott of Fayetteville, Kayle Scott and wife Alicia of New Mexico, granddaughters, Jennifer Scott Andersen and her husband Kenny of Raleigh, Caroline Scott of Fair Bluff, Mary Beth Scott of Fair Bluff, and Christina Scott of South Carolina, great-grandsons, Braden Paul Andersen of Raleigh, Judson and Desmond Bullard of Waco, Texas, and great-granddaughter, Campbell Grace Bullard of Waco, Texas.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Meares Funeral Home and at other times at Mr. Scott’s home 112 Waddell Street, Fair Bluff.

CLARKTON -- John Heyward, 70, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Survivors include her sisters, Ellastine Heyward Wade of Newark, N.J. and Maybell Jacksonof St. Albans, N.Y.; brothers, Arthur Lee Heyward of North Charleston, S.C., Joseph Heyward of Sumter, S.C., and William Heyward of Clarkton.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until time for the service.
ALINE BALDWIN ROUSE
CLARKTON -- Aline Baldwin Rouse, 73, died Saturay, Nov. 17, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Union Funeral Home of Whiteville.
Survivors include her husband, Fendly Rouse, a daughter, Betty Mangop; a son, Rashawn Rouse; three sisters, Maryline Burney, Maddie Williams, Henrietta Ann Leach; two brothers, Ernest baldwin and Mack Baldwin.

BRENDA GALE WILLIAMS
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Brenda Gale Williams, 59, formerly of Tabor City, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Oscar Lee and Mamie Williams.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery in Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Tanya; four brothers, James Williams, Charles Williams, Oscar Williams, and Robert Williams; two sisters, Mamie Louise Gordon and Catherine Chestnut.
