PEARL, Miss. -- Robert J. “Bob” Hardwick, 74, formerly of Whiteville, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007 in Pearl where he was a resident for the last five years. He was born Jan. 6, 1933 in Columbus County, the son of the late McDuffy and Frances Canady Hardwick.
Hardwick was a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He was a member of Pearson Road Baptist Church in Pearl.
Final rites with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at the graveside at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Pansy Ezzell Hardwick; a son, Robert E. Hardwick of Pearl, Miss.; a daughter, Angie Hardwick Byrd of Baker, La.; a sister, Ora Lee Townsend of Whiteville; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at the funeral home.

LUMBERTON -- Betty J. Hampton, 66, formerly of Whiteville, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Southeastern Hospice House.

JAMES DAVID SIMMONS
TIJUANA, Mexico -- James David Simmons, 73, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007. He was born July 26, 1934, the son of the late Thelma Ellis and I.J. Simmons. He was predeceased by his wife Linda Moremo Simmons. Simmons was an accident victim.
Simmons graduated from Hallsboro High School in 1952, and then joined the United States Navy. After his enlistment he settled in San Diego, Calif. He drove a yellow cab for years and enjoyed meeting and talking to people that he met on the job. He bought his own cab and continued driving until he retired seven years ago.
He married Linda Moreno and moved to Tijuana where he was living at the time of his untimely death.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, Nov. 8, in Tijuana.
Survivors include a daughter, Maria Moreno; two sisters, Verna Williamson of Lake Waccamaw and Faye Marks of Riegelwood; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

TABOR CITY -- Clydia Mae Clemons, 60, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at her residence. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Clyde Lovette and Artie Mae Lovette King.
Clemons was the owner/manager of Clemons Insurance Agency in Tabor City.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at New Horizon Baptist Worship Center with the Rev. Randy Ghent and Dr. Thomas L. Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Myrtle Green Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

LT. COL. WILLIAM DAVID ‘BILL’ SMALL JR. USAF (R)
WILMINGTON – Lt. Col. William David (Bill) Small, Jr., USAF (R), 84, died Thursday morning, Nov. 8, 2007, after a brief illness. A graduate of New Hanover High School, Bill began his 30-year Air Force career in the U.S. Army Air Corps with a bi-plane solo. His service spanned World War II through Vietnam and included delivering supplies in the Berlin Airlift, piloting jets, command of a C-130 squadron, and service in Vietnam before concluding at Pope AFB in 1973. He then enjoyed a second career at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville before retiring to spend time fishing and boating with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Doris Canady Small, parents William David Small and Islamae Small Kamer, and sister Margaret Small Byrd.
Graveside services will be held at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Madison Highfill officiating. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his children and their families: daughter, Lynn O’Neal and her husband BG Pat O’Neal, USA (R), of Beaufort, S.C. and grandson, MAJ Scott O’Neal, USA, and his wife Melissa and children, Brennan, Patrick, and Ellie of Ft. Hood, Texas; son, CDR William C. He was the son of the late Thomas and Retha Mae Edwards Bryant and was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. He retired from the Columbus County School System after teaching automotive mechanics for more than 20 years at Hallsboro High School.

ANNIE L. McCOY GRAINGER
CHADBOURN -- Annie L. McCoy Grainger, 84, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, due to Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Feb. 9, 1923 in Chadbourn, the youngest daughter of seven children of the late Abram B. and Hannah Council McCoy.
She attended the public schools in Chadbourn, graduating as valedictorian of the Westside High School Class of 1940. A well-liked and well-respected young lady, Annie was known for her outstanding public speaking abilities and participation on the school debate team.
At age 16, Annie joined First Missionary Baptist Church. On May 10, 1942, she married Arthur Grainger Jr. and moved to Baltimore, Md., living in the Fairfield and Cherry Hill communities. To this union, five sons and one daughter were born.
A life-long Missionary Baptist, she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She joined the O.E.S. Rising Sun Chapter #18 where her active leadership led to service as Worthy Matron.
A strong believer in education and helping others, Annie studied nursing at the University of Maryland Hospitals and worked as a licensed practical nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital for 19 years.
Annie loved growing flowers, sewing, baking and working with children. In 1984, the Graingers retired, moved home, and rejoined the First Missionary Baptist Church of Chadbourn. Annie served as president of both the Senior Missionary Circle and the Lumber River Auxiliary. She taught Sunday school, sang in the gospel choir and served as a deaconess.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at First Missionary Baptist Church in Chadbourn. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

HALLSBORO -- Walter C. Batten, 77, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007. He was the son of the late T.J. “Jappie” Batten and Helen Smith Batten and was preceded in death by his grandson, Stephen Batten.
Batten was a retired Columbus County building inspector, farmer, and merchant. He was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church and also served in the U.S. Army during World World II.
He served on the Columbus County School Board for several terms, was a member of Whiteville Kiwanis Club and active in Wildlife Action.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Hallsboro Baptist Church with Rev. Ed. Vogt officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Proctor Batten of the home; a son, Walter “Jerry” Batten and wife, Rita of Lumberton; a daughter, Sylvia B. FAIR BLUFF -- Linda Lee Komes Turner, 54, of the Spring Branch community, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, S.C. after a courageous and valiant struggle with muscular dystrophy, renal failure and diabetes.
Mrs. Turner was born in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late George L. and Marian Rukavena Komes. She was a graduate of Mather High School in Chicago, and Harper College in Palatine, Ill. She wed Allen Turner on Aug. 9, 1997. She was a retired receptionist.
At Linda’s request, there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Powell Cemetery in Fair Bluff with the Rev. Neill Smith and Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Turner, Bob Waddell, Bill Waddell, John Bridgers, Frank Garrison and James Hinson. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Allen Turner of the home. A lifelong animal lover who rescued hundreds of abandoned, stray and neglected animals over the years, she also is survived by her two dogs and four cats, whom she loved as much as most people love their children.

EVERGREEN -- Dorothy Boswell Britt, 84, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007. She was born Nov. 9, 1922 in WIlson. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Martha Boswell. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Casper Britt.
Britt was a retired teacher of Bladenboro School after teaching 30 years. She was a very devoted member and Sunday school teacher of her church, Lennons Crossroads Baptist Church.

HALLSBORO -- Jeannine Wayne Wilson, 71, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Lathal R. Wayne and Kitty Council Wayne. She was a member of the Lake Waccamaw First Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Flynn Cemetery with the Rev. Stuart Schumway officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Nora Leigh Hill of Hope Mills; grandsons, John Allen Wilson III of Hallsboro, and Sam Gore Wilson of Nakina.

SHALLOTTE -- Evia C. Long, 92, of Autumn Care, formerly of Ash Little-River Road, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007. Born in Brunswick County on Aug. 21, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Gaston and Rebecca Simmons McKeithan.
Mrs. Long was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard, Dacey, Burley, and Jessie McKeithan.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 from the graveside at the John H. Long Cemetery, Ash with her grandson, Thomas Duncan officiating. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

J. KEN WILLIAMS
CHARLOTTE -- J. Ken Williams, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born May 16, 1921 in Columbus County the son of the late Dolphus McCray and Ella Day Ward Williams, one of five children. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Miles Williams and William Slade Williams.
Williams was a prisoner of war during World War II, while serving in the United States Army. He was a general contractor and the owner of J. Ken Williams Quality Custom Homes. He was proud to have held the oldest active general contractors licenses in North Carolina.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Todd Cemetery in Tabor City. Hankins & Whittington of Charlotte is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sisters, Annie Mae Evans and Mary Lee Buffkin; children, Kenneth Allen Williams, Lucy Marie Williams Butler, John Robert Williams, and Richard Preston Williams; grandchildren, Lisa, Laura, Jo Lynn, Brent, Beck, Darby, Brett; great-grandchildren, Cody, Carrie, Presley, and Gray.
