The South Columbus High School girls tennis team managed to get some payback Tuesday as it went on the road to knock off Waccamaw Conference champion South Brunswick 6-3 in the opening round of the state 2A dual team playoffs.

In other state 2A playoff action, Whiteville traveled to Rockingham County to play McMichael and fell 6-3.

In the 1A playoffs, East Columbus fell to visiting East Carteret 6-3.

South Brunswick had beaten South Columbus in two of three matches they played in Waccamaw Conference regular-season play, but the Lady Stallions got another shot at the conference champs when they were bracketed as a wild card team against the Lady Cougars.

Coach Nathan Faulk’s SCHS squad won four of the singles matches and two of the doubles matches to advance.
South Columbus will travel to play Tarboro next Tuesday in third-round play.
