The last victory for the West Columbus High School football came on Oct. 20 of last season when they beat the South Robeson Mustangs 28-12 at Rowland.

Coach Vern Brigman’s Vikings rallied for 22 points in final quarter to overtake the Mustangs.

The Vikings will be out to gain another win over the Mustangs Friday night at 7:30 when they close out their schedule at home. West Columbus is trying to avoid its first winless season since 2000 when it finished at 0-11.

West Columbus is 0-5 in conference and 0-10 for the season while South Robeson is 1-3 and 2-7.

West Columbus fell to East Bladen 42-0 last week and South Robeson bowed to West Bladen 32-8.

West Columbus’ losses this season include a 7-0 setback at the hands of longtime rival Whiteville and a 23-15 overtime loss to Red Springs. They also gave a good showing in a 27-19 loss to North Brunswick.

Friday’s game will mark the final home appearance for several WCHS senior players, including senior two-way back Travis Leggett, a four-year starter.
