VINEGAR HILL - Junior back Rashawn Grate ran for 199 yards and four touchdowns on only eight carries Friday night in helping lead the unbeaten South Columbus Stallions to a 46-0 Waccamaw Conference football victory over the visiting Heide Trask Titans. South Columbus, which led 27-0 after one quarter, now has a 10-0 season record, including a 5-0 conference record. The win assured the Stallions of their ninth conference championship in 12 seasons. Coach Joey Price’s SCHS squad will travel to play Whiteville this Friday night intent on avenging last year’s 21-16 final-minute loss that gave WHS its first conference championship since 1993. South Columbus has been ranked fourth among the state’s 2A teams for the past several weeks and is headed to the state playoffs for the 13th straight season. Trask, which suffered its 16th straight conference loss dating back to the 2005 season, now holds a 3-7 record, including an 0-5 mark in conference play. Grate’s touchdown runs covered 68, 45, 56 and 14 yards as South Columbus did all the scoring in the first three quarters. The Stallions’ other touchdown came in the second quarter on a three-yard run by Justin Smith. The SCHS defense held Trask to 30 yards of total offense while intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble. It marked the Stallions’ sixth shutout of the season. Trask will close out regular-season play Friday when it plays host to East Columbus.
SC - Buster James 5 run (kick failed).
