Cougars dump struggling Wolfpack 21-7

BOILING SPRING LAKES - The Whiteville High football team’s hopes of defending the Waccamaw Conference championship this fall took another big hit Friday night.

The South Brunswick Cougars shut down the Wolfpack offense until late in the game and turned two WHS miscues into touchdowns as they remained unbeaten with a 21-7 Waccamaw Conference victory over the Wolfpack.

It was Whiteville’s first loss to South Brunswick since 2000 as well as their second straight conference loss. The Wolfpack, which had fallen hard to Pender 38-6 a week earlier, is now 1-2 in conference play and 5-3 overall.

Whiteville will play host to Heide Trask this Friday night at 7:30 in its annual homecoming game.

Coach Gordon Walters’ South Brunswick team improved its season record to 6-0 and 2-0 in conference as it scored in the closing moments of the first half and then scored on its first two possessions of the second half.

Whiteville got its only points with just over two minutes left in the game when quarterback Ben Deans scored on a one-yard sneak and Zack Stanley kicked the extra point.

Whiteville tried to grab some early momentum when senior back David Mosley returned the opening kickoff to the Cougar 21. But the Wolfpack failed to convert a fourth-down play to negate the threat.

A 38-yard touchdown run by Mosley was called back by a penalty.

South Brunswick got on the scoreboard soon after it was ruled that Stanley, the Whiteville punter, had his knee come in contact with ground while fielding the snap, giving the Cougars the ball at the Whiteville 31.

Cougar fullback Kenneth White scored on a 23-yard draw play with 1 minute 15 seconds left in the half. White ran the two-point conversion for an 8-0 halftime lead.

South Brunswick took the second half kickoff and drove 63 yards in eight plays with Matt Miller scoring on a 13-yard run.

Moments later, Stanley (replacing regular punter Tyson Wilcox, who was suspended from the team) mishandled a snap on another punt attempt and the Cougars recovered deep in Wolfpack territory. Miller caught at 13-yard scoring pass from Ryan Morgan on a fourth-down play and Jose Vera kicked the extra point for a 21-0 lead.

Whiteville had three turnovers for the night, including two pass interceptions.

Mosley rushed for 69 yards on nine carries and teammate Julian Thomas carried 13 times for 63 yards for Coach Mark Little’s Wolfpack.

White was the game’s leading rusher with 77 yards on 10 carries.
South Brunswick will pay this Friday at North Brunswick.
