W. PAUL CRAVEN
DILLON, S.C. -- W. Paul Craven Sr., 72, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at McLeod Medical Center. He was born in Mount Olive, S.C. the son of the late W. Boyce Craven and Lucile L. Craven. He was married to Marie Jackson Craven, a native of Mount Olive.
He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1955 and from the University of North Carolina Graduate School of Business in 1956. He was a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Banking in 1965 and from the School of Management at the University of South Carolina in 1968. He was an auditor with the U.S. Army Audit Agency in Europe from 1957 until 1959. He joined South Carolina National/Wachovia in 1959 and for 36 years worked in Greenville, Georgetown, Batesburg-Leesville, Bamberg, Denmark, and Dillon.
He formerly served as president of the Batesburg-Leesville Chamber of Commerce, president of the Batesburg-Leesville Lions Club and was a member and Chairman of the Lexington County Planning Commission from 1966 until 1982 when Lexington County was among the top 10 fastest growing counties in the United States. He was a church organist for 45 years working in several Baptist and Methodist Churches. He was a former deacon, treasurer, brotherhood director, and trustee in his church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Dillon First Baptist Church with burial in Powell Cemetery. Frank Stephens, Frank Hartley, O.J. Hatchell, Marcus Bethea, C.R. Turnage, and Ervin Coward will serve as pallbearers and the service will be conducted by Doctor William R. Cullum Jr. and Dr. Ray Lundy.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years; a son, Paul Craven, Jr. of Greenville, S.C. and his wife Kim; two granddaughters, Caroline and Christina Craven; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Fuller of Fair Bluff; and four nieces.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home.

PEGGY S. LABELLE
BLADENBORO -- Peggy S. Labelle, 68, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmngton. She was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Mittie Pait. She was predeceased by five sisters, Eunice Carroll, Annie Bell Perkins, Mary Lillie Pait, Beulah J. Pait, and Elene Storms; and a brother, Ernest Pait.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Mack Roberts officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Labelle of Bladenboro; a son, Michael Gardner of Garner; a daughter, Susan Gardner of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Eugene Pait of Lumberton, and Cleo Pait of Dublin; three sisters, Tillie Ruth Michael of Texas, Leona Leth Ellis of Arkansas, and Murelette Pallo of Maryland; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at the church.

GRAHAM CARTER
WHITEVILLE -- Graham Carter, 27, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007. He was the son of A.G. “Buster” Carter III and Genie Byrd Carter.
Carter was a member of First Baptist Church of Whiteville and was employed with Graka Builders. He had a special love for music and writing. He was a graduate of Whiteville High School.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Kerry Peeler officiating. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents, A.G. “Buster” Carter III and Genie Byrd Carter of Whiteville; a sister, Kate Carter of Whiteville; and paternal grandmother, Aline W. Carter of Whiteville.

ROY ALLEN JOLLY
GREENSBORO -- Roy Allen Jolly, 72, died on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Timothy Jay Patterson officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
Allen was born Nov. 21, 1934 in Whiteville. He was the son of the late Rev. Seymour Woodrow Jolly and Ezelah Wade Jolly. He was a graduate of Whiteville High School, attended Mars Hill College and was selected for the U.S. Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in 1955. He earned the rank of captain and was a navigator on active and reserve duty until 1972. While in the Air Force, he studied at Baylor University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He was a Hankamera Scholar and a member and officer of Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity. He continued his education at The Wharton School - University of Pennsylvania, and earned a MBA in 1963. He spent over 35 years in the banking industry. He started his career at First Union National Bank in 1963 and worked in Charlotte, Fayetteville, Southern Pines, and Greensboro. In 1975 he joined Community Bank in Greensboro and held several senior executive positions with Community Bank, Southern National Bank and BB&T, before retiring from BB&T in 1996. He and Southern National Bank were awarded the Long Leaf Pine award by Governor Jim Martin in 1992 for service on the North Carolina Business Committee for Education. The Committee was instrumental in focusing statewide business and community attention on the needs of our schools. After retirement he volunteered his time to the Episcopal Housing Ministry. He served on the boards of Southern National Bank, BB&T, The United Way, The Gate City Kiwanis Club, the North Carolina Forestry Association, The Community Theater of Greensboro, and Alcohol and Drug Services of Guilford County (ADS). As president of the Board of ADS he led the merger of the three existing county agencies into what is now known as Alcohol Drug Services of Guilford County. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, The 100 Club and The Greensboro Jaycees Oldtimers.
He enjoyed fishing, water skiing and boating at Ocean Isle Beach where the family enjoyed many vacations. He was a caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, of 30 years; son, Michael; daughter Lisa Jolly Small and husband Jerry of Greensboro; stepdaughters Cecilia Wright Symonds and husband Lawrence; Melissa Wright Niegro and husband Wesley of Greensboro; and AnnMarvin Wright Griffiths and husband Scott of Charlotte; four grandchildren; Lauren and John Small of Greensboro; Eloise and EmmaScott Griffiths of Charlotte.
The family would like to thank Mike Baker of MBI Sports and Fitness; The caring staff at Bayada Nurses for the extraordinary care they provided during his illness - especially, Mary Bolder, Annette Cathey, Lisa Dean, Sunday Igbokwe, Miranda Johnson, Lisa Lawson, and Modinet Shittu. In addition, the family would like the thank the staff of Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for providing exemplary care in the last months of his life.

EDITH STRICKLAND SHELLEY GRAINGER McCUMBEE
TABOR CITY -- Edith Strickland Shelley Grainger McCumbee, 87, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, at Liberty Commons in Whiteville following an illness.
McCumbee was born March 17, 1920 in Cherry Grove, a daughter of the late Furnie and Nellie Strickland. She was a retired C.N.A. from Loris Community Hospital and was a member of the First Assembly of God in Loris, S.C.
She was predeceased by three husbands, Paul Shelley, Shelton Grainger, and Jim McCumbee; five brothers, and one sister.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Mathew officiating. Committal services will follow in the church cemetery with Reverends Jackie Strickland and Steve Shinn officiating. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Angelee Baker of Conway, S.C., and Saundra Rowe of Tabor City; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

BOLTON -- Frank Nye, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center.
Born in Columbus County April 4, 1938, he was the son of the late Graham David and Ester Mitchell Nye.
He was a minister, philosopher, historian, politician, artist and a brick mason.
A celebration of life service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Old Lake Road off Highway 211, N. Bolton.
Surviving are a son, Frank Nye Jr. of Wilmington; a brother, Benny Nye of Lake Waccamaw; three grandchildren.

ROGERS LEGRANDE HAMMOND
NICHOLS, S.C. -- Rogers Legrande Hammond, 82, of the Spring Branch community, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at his residence. He was born in Horry County, the son of the late Julius Hicks and Sadie Rogers Hammond.
Hammond was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 1st Calvary Division. He was wounded in service and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a retired farmer and businessman and was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for more than 50 years.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with Dr. Floyd Enzor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Doris C. ELSIE ELIZABETH LASSITER COLLIER
PEARLAND, Texas --Elsie Elizabeth Lassiter Collier, 89, died on Oct. 14, 2007. She was born on July 19, 1918 in Apex, the daughter of the late Talitha Elizabeth McNeil Lassiter and William Malphaus Lassiter. She was the widow of the late Charles Edward Collier Sr. of Peacock Rd. and Old Lumberton Rd. They were members of Western Prong Baptist Church.
She owned her own beauty shop for many years then helped her husband run their country store, did the books, as well as helping on the farm and gardening. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and immaculate housekeeper. She was always available to bake something for the North Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department. She and her husband loved to visit or pop call and usually had something cooked or out of the garden with them.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
“Miss Elsie” as many called her is survived by her two children, Nancy and Charles Jr., five grandchildren, Charles Collier III, Lisa Clewis, Stephen Gibson, Jonathan Gibson, Hope Gibson, and eight great-grandchildren, Adelynn Gibson, Eric Gibson, Kevin Clewis, David Clewis, Mazie Clewis, Charles Collier IV, Samantha McPherson, and Dawn Clewis; and two great-great-grandchildren, Shade Puckett and Dillon Clewis.

CHADBOURN -- Reatha Tedder Malott Pigott, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 28,2 007, at Charlotte Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Chester Royal and Ella Dew Tedder.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Worthington Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery in Bladenboro. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Ray Malott of Charlotte, and James T. Malott of Chadbourn; a sister, Louise Priest of Chadbourn; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BRONX, N.Y. -- Carolyn Jacqueline Campbell, 60, formerly of Clarkton, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at Calvary Hospital.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Pierce Chapel AME Zion Church in Clarkton. Burial will follow in the Mitchell Field Cemetery in Clarkton. There will be no public viewing. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

EARLINE WILSON JACKSON
RED SPRINGS -- Earline Wilson Jackson, 63, beloved wife of Dr. Douglas Jackson, passed away in her home on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007. She was born on Friday, July 28, 1944, to the late Henry Huey and Lizzie Belle Conner Wilson of Fair Bluff.
Earline was the loving mother of two sons, Jeffrey Douglas and wife Sherie Deaver and Stephen Scott and wife Kelly Sheats, and doting grandmother of three, MacKenzie, Samuel and Nellie Grace. She is also survived by her devoted sister and caretaker, Linda Wilson Pridgen.
After teaching mathematics for nine years, Earline managed her husband’s dental practice for 33 years until her health would no longer allow. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Red Springs.
Final rites were held Monday, Oct. 29, at First Baptist Church in Red Springs with the Reverends Bradley Boberg, Michael McGehee and Diana Killian officiating. Burial followed in the Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs. Crumpler Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Red Springs handled the arrangements.
