Tornadoes blow past West Columbus

FAIRMONT – After taking their lumps in four straight non-conference games, the Fairmont Golden Tornadoes got on track just in time Friday night as they cruised to a 49-8 Southeastern 1A-2A Conference football victory over the visiting West Columbus Vikings.

Fairmont, which had been held to a total of 19 points in its first four games, chalked up 22 points in the first quarter and led 28-8 at the half.

Golden Tornado back Ascare Douglas led the way with 131 yards rushing on 17 carries, including runs of 51, 6 and 8 yards.

The loss dropped West Columbus to 0-6 for the season. The Vikings managed to score for the first time in three games when Eric Green connected with Kendall Bullock on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Green threw to Tyrale George for the two-point conversion pass.

Michael Bass scored another Fairmont touchdown on a one-yard run and converted five of seven extra point kicks. Brandon Campbell, Lonnie Nealy and Doug Govan also had touchdown runs for Fairmont, which opened the game’s scoring with a safety.

Sean Brown led West Columbus rushers with 44 yards on four carries, and Green completed three passes for 91 yards.

Coach Vernon Brigman’s West Columbus team will entertain West Bladen this Friday night at 7:30. West Bladen had an open date Friday night after finishing non-conference play with a 1-4 record.

Fairmont will play host to an East Bladen team that suffered a 26-25 upset loss to St. Pauls Friday.
