History Question

Why is the highway intersection just east of Chadbourn called Peacock?

Answer

Jennings Peacock was a Wilmington businessman who established a turpentine distillery along the Wilmington & Manchester Railroad as soon as the railroad was completed in 1854.
Peacock was an active dealer in naval stores, and operated several other businesses, plus farmed land near this railroad stop. One of the major north-south rural roads in Columbus County – known as 1003 – is also named for the Peacock family.
