Wanted: garbage

• Whiteville Litter Sweep effort started Saturday.

Whiteville residents can get rid of furniture, tires, and other large garbage for free through May 4.

All that’s required is to move the items to the curb, where Waste Management trucks can gather the items. The effort is part of this year’s litter sweep, which began Saturday and continues through May 4.

City manager Joshua Ray said this is a chance for residents to “spruce up a bit more than usual.”

Free garbage bags will be available at City Hall for individuals or groups who promise to clean up neighborhoods throughout the city. The filled bags can be left at the curb for pickup.

“We’d like to have some more organizations and businesses involved,” Ray said. “We already have a number of commitments, but if it’s just one or two people that want to lend a hand, they’re welcome to help out.”
