WHS softball team grabs key win over N. Brunswick

Covington had a big night for WHS, knocking a three-run homer and a triple as the Lady Wolfpack improved its conference record to 5-2 and season mark to 7-2. Whiteville will go against Trask on Tuesday at night at 7 at Rocky Point.


 

The Whiteville Lady Wolfpack jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind a double by Elizabeth Williams, and later got big lifts on a triple and a three-run homer by Ashae Covington in an 8-5 Waccamaw Conference softball victory over visiting North Brunswick.

Freshman Dallas Hewett pitched a three-hitter while striking out six batters as Coach Dudley Revels’ WHS squad stayed unbeaten on its home field this season.
Danielle Cassidy drove in two Whiteville runs with a pair of singles.

Whiteville, which avenged a 7-1 loss to North Brunswick in their first conference encounter at Leland, holds a 5-2 record in conference play and is 7-2 overall. They Lady Wolfpack is currently in third place in the conference standings, trailing Pender and East Columbus, who have one league loss apiece.

Covington, who had led off Whiteville’s two-run third inning with a triple, ripped her three-run homer over the left field fence in the fifth inning to give the Lady Wolfpack an 8-2 lead.

North Brunswick scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Brandi Breus was the winning pitcher, and Carrie Evanson pitched in relief for the Lady Scorpions.

Whiteville will play at Trask Tuesday night at 7.
