The drought-busting rains of recent weeks have been welcomed by all in Columbus County and the rest of Southeastern North Carolina. As good as the return of heavy precipitation has been, the rains have brought concerns to high-school sports, particularly baseball. “It’s amazing the number of rain-outs we’re having to deal with,” said WCHS baseball coach Ricky Young, who has had five games postponed by rain. “We have no complaints at all about the rain we’re getting in this area, it’s just that if we have to postpone another game or two, we could have some difficulty completing our regular-season schedules.” Whiteville and East Columbus have each had four rainouts while West Columbus and Waccamaw Academy have had three each. Last Thursday’s key Waccamaw Conference game between Whiteville and East Columbus at Lake Waccamaw was postponed by wet grounds and is rescheduled for tonight at 7. The East Columbus-Whiteville softball game was played Thursday as scheduled. This week’s high-school baseball/softball schedule follows: TONIGHT TUESDAY FRIDAY
