Gator girls, Cougar boys claim Waccamaw Conference victories |

BOILING SPRING LAKES - The East Columbus High girls basketball team bounced back from last Tuesday’s lop-sided loss to Pender by coming away with a 73-55 Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference victory over the South Brunswick Lady Cougars. In the boys game, East Columbus suffered its fifth straight loss in seven conference outings as it dropped a 54-39 loss with the host Cougar squad. The Lady Gators’ high-scoring trio over T.T. Bennett, Jasmine Young and Tabitha Moore was back in form for the Lady Gators, who have a 5-2 Waccamaw Conference record and are in a three-way tie for second place with South Columbus and North Brunswick in the league race. Bennett scored 21 points, Young tallied 20 and Moore finished with 19 for Coach Karlyn Stephens’ Lady Gators, who jumped to a 19-2 lead in the first quarter and 36-16 at the half. The Lady Gators, who took their second conference win over the Lady Cougars this season, have a season record of 11-6. Kat Adams led South Brunswick scorers with 13 points, including four 3-point baskets. The South Brunswick boys team took control early, outscoring the Gators 17-4 in the first quarter to up its conference record to 5-2. Ervin Hall’s 14 points led the way for the Cougars and Ryan Waldrep followed with 13 points as Coach Dan McGougan’s squad recorded its second conference victory over the Gators. Anthony Fields led Coach Clarence Ganus’ Gators with 12 points. C.J. Ganus had 11 as ECHS fell to 1-6 in conference and 5-12 overall. East Columbus will play host to South Columbus on Tuesday and will travel to take on North Brunswick on Friday. GIRLS GAME
