S. Brunswick, Fairmont hold leads |

South Brunswick and Fairmont high schools currently hold leads in their respective conferences in 2007-08 Wachovia Conference Cup competition following the completion of fall sports. According to tabulations released by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, South Brunswick currently leads the Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference with 59.5 points after taking championships in girls tennis, volleyball and cheerleading. Pender is close behind with 55.5 points behind first-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country. Rounding out the Waccamaw Conference are North Brunswick 36, Whiteville 34.5, Heide Trask 30, South Columbus 23.5 and East Columbus 12. Fairmont, with league titles in girls tennis and volleyball, leads the Southeastern 1A-2A Conference with 19 points, just ahead of West Bladen’s 18 points. The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia Bank and the NCHSAA since 1980, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performances within their respective conferences.
