Francis Marion, known throughout the South as “The Swamp Fox,” was an officer of the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He passed through what became Columbus County several times.
Marion wrote to Gen. Horatio Gates on Sept. 15, 1780 from “Marsh Castle” about his movements and skirmishes in South Carolina during the earlier part of that month.
