WHS boys
put end to
losing skid

A five-game losing streak came to a halt for the Whiteville High School boys basketball team Tuesday night as it overpowered the visiting North Brunswick Scorpions 72-49 in a Waccamaw Conference game.

WHS coach Kenzil McCall employed a fullcourt, man-to-man defense that gave the Wolfpack the upper hand almost from the outset.

“Other teams have been putting a lot of pressure on us, so we decided to turn the tables tonight and we became the ones applying the pressure,” McCall said. “We needed something to get us going again and our kids responded.”

Junior forward Dexter Phillips had his best outing of the season, scoring a team-high 16 points and grabbing a dozen rebounds.

Whiteville, which had suffered a 13-point loss to the Scorpions in their earlier conference meeting at Leland, put its conference record at 3-5 (with all three wins on its home floor) and overall mark at 8-10.

The Wolfpack, which led 36-27 at halftime, got 11 points each from Sprandon Mahoney and Ramel Godfrey, and Nur Abdullah followed with nine. It was the Wolfpack’s first win since Jan. 4 when it took a five-point home victory over Trask.

North Brunswick, which slipped to 2-6 in conference play, got a game-high 17 points from Shawn Sanders and Reggie Cobia scored 13.

Sanders had poured in 39 points in the Scorpions earlier victory over the Wolfpack.

In the girls game, Whiteville managed to gain a 27-16 halftime lead, but North Brunswick went on a strong run in the final two quarter to take a 64-53 victory.

Tyre Fisher’s 24 points led the way for North Brunswick Latasia Harrison had 14 and Ashley Robbins added 10.

Anastasia Wilson’s 14 points led Whiteville and Aubrey Evans had 10.

The North Brunswick girls squad is 6-2 in conference play while Whiteville is 1-7

Whiteville will conclude its regular-season home schedule Friday when it travels to take on Trask.
