Vikings take
9-inning win
over SCHS

VINEGAR HILL - Josh Coleman doubled home Truman Vereen in the top of the ninth inning and Timothy “Batman” Brown earned the mound win in relief Tuesday as the West Columbus Vikings gained a 4-3 non-conference baseball win over the host South Columbus Stallions in a non-conference baseball game.

It was the final regular-season game for both teams.

West Columbus closed the regular season with an 11-12 record and will open the state 1A playoffs on Friday when it travels to play Topsail at 7 p.m. Coach Ricky Young’s Vikings hold the No. 2 1A playoff seed from the Southeastern 1A-2A Conference.

South Columbus finished its regular-season schedule with a 15-7 record and will play host to Red Springs Friday night at 7. Coach Willie Gore’s Stallions hold the No. 2A playoff seed from the Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference.

Kenyarta Smith hit a run-scoring double and a home run to pace West Columbus, which gained its second win in three games with South Columbus this season.

With both teams headed for the playoffs Friday, coaches used their entire pitching staffs in the game.

Ethan Ward, Pat Worley, Justin Duncan and Dusty Duncan pitched for South Columbus.

On Monday, rain forced postponement of the South Columbus-Trask game, and Trask decided to forfeit the game in order to go against Pender in a one-game playoff for the second 1A playoff spot from the Waccamaw Conference.

Pender’s game at East Columbus was also rained out and Pender had to forfeit that game in order to meet Trask in the playoff game.
